Accommodation in Myanmar:

From 2011 to 2013, hotels in Myanmar have raised their fares, and it’s advisable to check their websites for the updated info. Anyway, there are still many options for the low budget travelers in most of the touristic places. Tourism is expected to grow much more next upcoming years. There are few new tourism infrastructures being build. According to the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, Myanmar has 787 licensed hotels and approximately 28,000 rooms. For that reason, in high season and during special events like Taungyi  Balloon Festival, it is difficult to find accommodation. Due to this difficulty try to arrive to your hotel earlier than the check out time if you haven't booked in advance. Bear in mind that Myanmar government forbid foreigners to sleep in the street or to camp, for that reason they should provide you a place to sleep in case all hotels are full. Usually the last option is sleeping in a Buddhist temple for few dollars. Myanmar government forbid Burmese citizens to host foreigners but I found few cases where foreigners where hosted by locals.

Warning:  It’ s very common that hotels requires you to reconfirm your reservation at least 1 day before your arrival, especially if you still haven’t paid for it. Most of the hotels in Myanmar are licensed to host foreigners but there are still some left where only locals are allowed.
