BAGO (PEGU)
This former capital of the Mon kingdom is located in an area situated about 75 kilometers northeast of Yangon. It was founded in 573 by two Mon princesses.

If you arrive here early morning, it is possible to stay for some hours to see all sightseeing and continue traveling to other destinations.

How to get here
From North: If you take a night bus from Mandalay, Bagan or Inle Lake, the bus fare is the same than to Yangon

Train

Yangon>Bago- Departs at 6am, 8am, 11am, 3pm, 5pm, 8.30pm

Visit
Foreigners must pay 10$ to visit main pagodas in the city. If you go after 3-4pm. entrance is free.

Shwemawdaw Pagoda- Located 2 Km. from the heart of Bago, it is the tallest pagoda in Myanmar, even taller than the famous Shwe Dagon Pagoda.

Shwethalyaung (Shwe Thar Lyaung)  Buddha is a famous reclining image of a huge Buddha of 180 feet in length and 52.5 feet in height. Tradition says that it was built by King Mingadhipa in 994 A.D to commemorate his conversion to Buddhism. The sculpture was missing for many years as it was underground, until during British Era, when an Indian contractor found it during the construction of the railway line. The image was restored in 1881. It is also known as “the golden reclining image”.

Kanbawza Thadi Palace was built by King Bayinnaung (1551-1581 A.D.), the founder of the second Myanmar Empire. It is a great archaeological site in Bago.

Kyaik Pun Pagoda is not a building but a gorgeous sculpture of four Buddha images sitting and facing the four cardinal points of the compass. It’ s not far off the Yangon-Bago road. It was built by King Dhamma Zedi in 1476 A.D.

Moeyingyi Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary is located 112 km (70 miles) along Yangon - Bago - Pyinpongyi highway. where the birds from many parts of the world can be observed.

Pho Kyar Elephant Camp- It' s an elephant camp located at the foothill of the Bago Yoma mountain. The camp has over 60 elephants. It also offers 7 bungalows for visitors staying overnight.

San fransisco Guest House- Single from $10/ Double with ensuite and fan $15. Basic rooms with shared bathroom. Includes breakfast. Noisy area, in the main road and there is a lot of traffic.
