Getting there

By plane

Yangon International Airport (Mingaladon). Yangon International Airport. Counter Arrival lounge Phone: 95-01-533154, 95-01-533030(Ext-203).

Many airlines flight from Bangkok, like Myanmar Airways International, Thai Airways International and Air Asia, which is the cheapest option if you come from south/east Asia. Jetstar, for flights coming from east Asia and Australia. It is also possible to flight to/ from Chiang Mai with Air Bagan but prices are high. They usually have promotions for Myanmar citizens. Cheapest domestic flights with Air KBZ and Air Mandalay.
Exchange money in the airport. It is not a rip off, as I read in some travel guides.

Taxi from the airport to Yangon’s downtown cost about US$10 or 8000 kyats (in this case, best if you pay in kyats) and to Sule Pagoda area is about 12-15$ maximum. But you always can bargain. Some unlicensed taxis will try to take you and they’ ll try to charge you more than regular prices..
If you exit the international terminal and turn right, walking along the road for about 10 minutes, you'll hit Pyay Road, from where you can take public bus 51 (200 kyat/0.25$) which will take you one block east of Sule Pagoda, where some cheap guest houses are located.

There are 4 entrances (North, South, east, west).

Kandawgyi park- It’s located in the centre of Yangon. Kandawgyi means “The Great (or Royal)  lake” in Myanmar Language. It sorrounds a gorgeous lake and it is surrounded by the Yangon Zoological Garden, Aquarium, and many restaurants. There is a boat, by the lake, converted in a restaurant with the shape of the mythical bird called the Karaweik and it is one of the main tourist attractions in Yangon, the Karaweik Palace. Bogyoke (Scott) Market- It’s a very popular and vibrant market. It’ s a bit touristic and for that reason, it’ s a bit more expensive than other markets where you’ ll find real bargains, like in Bagan or Kalaw market. If you want to buy clothes, it’s ok. It’s packed with jewelry shops and some local handicrafts. It’ s also a good place to exchange money if the bank is closed. Try to get a good deal and compare. Go around the market, have some tea or drink with locals. Try Burmese sweet tea.

Sule Pagoda- Entrance 2$. It is believed to be over 2,000 years old. It is said to contain a hair of the Buddha. This temple is located in a vibrant area, located near the City Hall and the Myanmar Travels and Tours office and not far from Bogyoke Market in the intersection of Sule Pagoda road and Mahabandoola road. Once you have seen Shwedagon Pagoda, maybe this temple is not that impressive but still is an interesting building to visit, or at least and interesting area to walk around where you’ll also find a catholic church, a hindu temple and a mosque, all together in few hundred meters from there.

Maha Bandoola Park- Here stands the Independence Monument, to proclaim the Burmese Independence from the British in 1948: it’s a large obelisk guarded by statues of Chinthes (mythical animal in half lion-dog or dragon shape. They protect the pagodas and always come in pairs). Located southeast of the Sule Pagoda, about only 5 minutes walking. Address: Mahabandoola Garden Street.

Inya Lake- Located in the north of the city. It is the largest lake in Yangon. It was created artificially by the British as a water reservoir in order to provide water supply in Yangon. A series of pipes distributes water from Inya Lake to Kandawgyi Lake, near downtown Yangon.

Union National races village- 3$ entrance. Built by Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs. This place was created to show the traditional way of living of the National races in Myanmar. It’s a “Mini Myanmar” where we you can see the different Villages, type of buildings and different customs around the country. It could be best preserved. Some areas are a bit crumbling and need to be restored. It is s located in Tharketa Township, near Thanlyin Bridge, a bit far from downtown.

Botataung Pagoda- Entrance $3 entrance. The tradition says that two sacred hairs and treasures are buried beneath the pagoda.

This is more a what to do that a what to see but taking Circle Line Train in Yangon is a cheap way to see some things around the city. It costs 1$.
